CBD can be extremely helpful to many individuals with ADHD!
But let’s look a little more into what CBD can and can’t do for ADHD.
What CBD Won’t Do For ADHD
What CBD won’t do is replace stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD. There is no evidence that suggests CBD works in the same capacity as those types of medication.
I also can’t find anything to suggest that CBD helps bolster executive functioning skills like working memory, planning and prioritizing, and organization.
CBD won’t be an alternative to stimulant and non-stimulant prescription medications.
Unfortunately, stimulant medication is still the cornerstone for treating ADHD.
CBD still does have a well-deserved seat at the “treatment table” as it has been scientifically proven to be effective for certain co-occurring conditions that someone with ADHD may suffer from.
What CBD Can Do For ADHD
An inability to focus, impulsivity, mood disturbances and other symptoms commonly experienced by someone with ADHD can be caused by or exacerbated by a lack of sleep, anxiety, depression, or chronic pain.
If your ADHD symptoms are made worse by anxiety, lack of sleep, depression, etc. CBD can help your ADHD by helping treat those issues.
ADHD & Common Co-Occurring Diagnosis
Having a “Co-Occurring Diagnosis” simply means that you have two or more diagnosis at the same time. For example; one might experience depression and anorexia.
Another example could be an individual that has a diagnosis of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Methamphetamine Use Disorder.
Having co-occurring diagnosis is extremely common. In fact, ADHD is often missed at first due to the presence of co-occurring conditions.
According to the CHADD website:
“In adults with ADHD, approximately 47 percent also have depression.”
“Up to 53 percent of adults with ADHD may also have an anxiety disorder.”
“One-half of parents of children with ADHD report that their children suffer from a sleep problem, especially difficulties with falling asleep and staying asleep.” As you can see in the stats above almost half (or more) people with ADHD also experience a condition that CBD has been scientifically proven to be helpful for! This is exactly why CBD has the potential to be super helpful to those with ADHD!
